A Parachute

   a Million Dollars?

If you were forced to jump out of an airplane at 10,000 feet and were given two choices, a parachute or a million dollars in cash, which would you choose?

Unless you want to die, you will choose the parachute and keep the law of gravity from killing you. Only the parachute will save you. Nothing else will have any value to you except the parachute. Incredibly, when it comes to salvation from hell (Judgment Day), many people choose the million dollars instead of the parachute.

In other words, many people choose to remain on their own sinful path of destruction, instead of choosing to place their faith in Jesus Christ alone to rescue them from hell. Jesus said “broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat” (Matthew 7:13).

Romans 8:2 speaks of “the law of sin and death.” This is like a spiritual law of gravity. If you die without having your sins forgiven, you must pay the penalty of judgment for your own sins. The Bible in Romans 3:23 that “all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (God’s moral perfection) and “the wages of sin is death” (Rom. 6:23). This means that every person must pay the penalty for his own sin which he has committed against a holy God. Hebrews 9:27 says, “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.”

You die only once. If you are not wearing the parachute (God’s gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ), you will experience spiritual death or separation from God forever in hell. Revelation 20:15 says, “And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.”

The Bible says in John 3:36 that God’s wrath abides on you (“the wrath of God abideth on him”), and every time you sin you are storing up more of God’s wrath (“treasurest up unto thyself wrath” – Romans 2:5) that will be revealed to you on Judgment Day.

Perhaps you say, “I don’t believe in hell.” This does not change the reality of hell and what the Bible teaches (Mark 9:43-49; Luke 16:19-31; 2 Thess. 1:9). If you stand in the open door of a plane 10,000 feet off the ground and say, “I don’t believe there will be any consequences if I jump without a parachute,” then you are only deceiving yourself.

Thankfully God has provided a way for us to receive eternal life so we can be rescued from hell and live with Him forever in Heaven. 1 Peter 2:24 declares that Jesus Christ “bare our sins in his own body on the tree.” Elsewhere the Bible says, “Christ died for our sins” (1 Cor. 15:3). This means that when Jesus died on the cross He took the penalty of judgment for your sin, so you can be rescued from hell.

Here is God’s provision or parachute for eternal life. Jesus died on the cross in your place. He took your penalty of judgment (“He was wounded for our transgressions” – Isa. 53:5) so you can receive forgiveness of your sins and pardon in God’s presence (“the forgiveness of sins” - Eph. 1:7). Jesus rose from the dead proving He defeated death and can now give you eternal life (“the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” – Rom. 6:23). You can receive the free gift of eternal life through the provision that Jesus Christ made for every person in the world (John 3:16).

You are standing on the edge of eternity! You are faced with a decision. You will someday pass through the door of death. Where will you be when you take the leap into the next life? Do you fear the jump? Do you want to be delivered or rescued from hell and Judgment Day?

The Bible teaches that every person must step out in faith and “take the water of life freely”  (Rev. 22:17). Salvation and the gift of eternal life with God in Heaven becomes ours “by faith in Christ Jesus” (Gal. 3:26). The Bible says we are saved by grace “through faith” (Eph. 2:8). Faith is total reliance upon Christ to do something which you could never do for yourself.

Are you ready to put on the parachute? Are you ready to place your faith in Christ so you can be forgiven, rescued from hell, and receive the gift of eternal life? The choice is yours.

The parachute of God’s salvation, safety, and spiritual deliverance from hell is available to you through faith in Jesus Christ. “Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13).

Is there anything keeping you from expressing faith in Christ? If not, a simple prayer is provided below, which can become the personal decision of your own heart.

Dear Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner. I believe You died on the cross to pay the penalty for my sin. I believe You rose from the dead to save me from hell, forgive my sins, and give me eternal life. I am placing my faith in Your death and resurrection to save me today. Thank You for giving me eternal life in Heaven. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
